Welcome to WorldWide Wanderlust, where I share my adventures and discoveries in the world of quirky and unusual attractions. Today, I want to tell you about one of the most whimsical and delightful places I have ever visited: The Gnome Reserve.
The Gnome Reserve is a four-acre garden in Devon, England, that is home to over 2000 gnomes and pixies. Yes, you read that right: 2000 gnomes and pixies. These are not your ordinary garden gnomes, mind you. They are all hand-painted and have their own personalities and stories. Some of them are even celebrities, like Sherlock Gnomes, Gnomeo and Juliet, and Harry Potter.
The Gnome Reserve was founded in 1979 by Ann Atkin, who has a passion for gnomes and believes they bring joy and luck to people. She started collecting gnomes when she was a child and never stopped. She decided to create a place where people could enjoy her collection and learn more about the history and folklore of gnomes.
The garden is divided into different areas, such as the Wild Flower Garden, the Pond Area, the Woodland Walk, and the Pixie Glen. Each area has its own theme and features different types of gnomes and pixies. You can also find other magical creatures, like fairies, dragons, unicorns, and trolls.
One of the best things about visiting the Gnome Reserve is that you get to wear a gnome hat and join the fun. Yes, you heard that right: you get to wear a gnome hat. There are hundreds of hats to choose from, in different colors and sizes. You can also borrow a fishing rod and pretend to fish with the gnomes by the pond. It’s a great way to unleash your inner child and have a laugh.
The Gnome Reserve is not only a place for fun, but also for education. There is a museum that displays gnomes from different countries and eras, as well as books and articles about gnomes. You can learn about the origins of gnomes, their myths and legends, their customs and habits, and their role in art and culture.
The Gnome Reserve is open from March to October, from 10 am to 6 pm. The admission fee is £5 for adults and £3.50 for children. You can also buy souvenirs, such as gnome figurines, postcards, magnets, and books at the gift shop.
If you are looking for a unique and enchanting experience, I highly recommend visiting the Gnome Reserve. It’s a place where you can forget about your worries and immerse yourself in a world of fantasy and wonder. You will never look at gnomes the same way again.
